Group 62 Instruments Bulletin Number 62 04 98 Woodcliff Lake, NJ May 1998 Product Engineering SUBJECT: Various Functions Inoperative on Instrument Cluster with Integrated IKE MODEL: 7 Series (E38), 5 Series (E39) with Integrated IKE Situation: The following functions on the Instrument Cluster with integrated IKE are inoperative: Turn signal/hazard indicators; High beam indicators; Board computer; Clock; Gong; Seat belt warning indicator stays on with seat belt buckled and ignition on, but flashes when in Terminal R; In addition, LCM is not recognized by the DIS tester, A/C compressor is inoperative; Fault code 20 (Internal fault in LCM) is stored. Additionally, fault code 21 (Internal fault in Instrument Cluster) may be set in the IKE , and Terminal R faults may be set in the General Module . Analog gauges, and other warning indicators work normally. Cause: Use of the OBC code can occasionally cause the loss of K-Bus communications between the IKE and the General Module . The OBC code is the additional security code which may be entered into the Board Computer or MID by the customer, when exiting the vehicle. This code must then be re-entered before the engine can be restarted. Correction: NOTE: When booking the vehicle in for repair, be sure to request the OBC code used by the customer. DO NOT REPLACE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. Remove the Instrument Cluster and disconnect all the plug connectors. Reconnect the plug connectors and reinstall the Instrument Cluster, and all normal instrument cluster functions will be restored. Switch ignition "ON", and MID, or Board Computer will request the OBC code. Enter the OBC code, and the engine can be started. If the OBC code is not available, disconnect both battery cables , touch the disconnected battery cables together, reconnect the battery , switch on ignition, and wait for (10) minute countdown displayed on the MID or Board Computer. The engine will then restart. (Time and date will need to be reset, and windows and sunroof reinitialized.) Using the DIS tester, delete all fault codes. Request that the customer does not use the OBC code feature until a permanent fix has been found. Warranty Information: Parts and labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles. Defect Code: 62 10 90 15 00 Labor Operation: Remove and reinstall Instrument Cluster Main Work 62 21 000 5 FRU (E39) 3 FRU (E38) or Associated Work +62 21 500 3 FRU (E39) 2 FRU (E38) Note: The following explanations will spell out the correct use of the work times. Main Work: Use this time when the only repair performed is the listed warranty repair. OR Associated Work: Use this time when other repairs or services are performed along with the listed warranty repair. Under no circumstances should both work times be claimed. Attempts to claim both times will result in an unnecessary delay in claim processing and payment.
